How to apply for a US phone plan, step by step

What you need before you start, what happens after you click through to the operator, and how to switch without losing your number.

Every price below comes from an operator feed we import, with the date it was last verified. Links marked “See this deal” are affiliate links: we may earn a commission if you sign up, at no extra cost to you, and it never changes our ranking.

Before you start

Have your ZIP code, a photo ID, a payment card and — if you are keeping your number — your current account number and transfer PIN ready.

Check that your phone is unlocked and supports the network the plan runs on. Our plan pages show the network and whether eSIM is available.

Applying

Pick your plan here, then use the deal link to go to the operator. The operator takes the application and confirms the final price, including any taxes and fees not shown in the feed.

Most prepaid plans activate the same day. eSIM plans usually send a QR code by email within minutes.

Keeping your number

Do not cancel your old service first. Start the new plan, ask for a number transfer, and the old line closes automatically once the transfer completes.
